WAFCON 2026 Drama Unfolds as South Africa’s Quarter-Final Hopes Hang by a Thread

JOHANNESBURG – The Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2026 delivered another nail-biting chapter as South Africa’s Banyana Banyana secured a 2-2 draw against Ivory Coast in Casablanca, but their path to the quarter-finals now rests on a delicate balance of results and resilience. The match, played on Friday, August 1, left Group B in a precarious state, with the defending champions now bottom of the table after two grueling rounds, clinging to just one point—a stark contrast to Ivory Coast’s four points, Burkina Faso’s three, and Tanzania’s three.

A Desperate Struggle for Survival

For South Africa, the stakes could not be higher. A back-to-back World Cup qualification was within reach before the tournament began, with Brazil hosting the 2027 edition. The top four teams from WAFCON automatically secure their spots in the 32-team World Cup, while the quarter-final losers will earn a play-off opportunity—first in Morocco, then in an inter-continental qualifier.

However, South Africa’s debut disaster against Tanzania—65 places lower in FIFA rankings—set the tone for a rocky start. A 2-1 defeat in their opening match left the team in disarray, but they refused to fold. The Ivory Coast clash promised redemption, yet the first half saw Grace Sery (18), the clinical young striker, open the scoring twice, giving the West Africans a 2-0 lead by halftime.

A Second-Half Resurgence and Heartbreak

With their World Cup dreams teetering on collapse, South Africa’s defense stiffened, and Thembi Kgatlana pulled one back in the 71st minute. The match seemed lost when Hildah Magaia, a key player from their 2023 World Cup run, was denied an added-time goal for offside. But fate had other plans.

In the ninth minute of stoppage time, Magaia—who had been substituted on—rose above Ivory Coast’s goalkeeper, Aramatou Diakite, to equalize, securing a 2-2 draw and a critical point. The drama was not over, though, as Ronnel Donnelly later nodded the ball into the net, sealing the result.

Meanwhile, in the other Group B match, Burkina Faso capitalized on a red card for Tanzania’s Hasnath Ubamba (sent off for a dangerous tackle on goalkeeper Nina Dabilgou) to secure a 2-1 victory. Balkissa Sawadogo sealed the win in the 80th minute, while Aisha Mnunka had equalized for Tanzania after a quick rebound from a Donisia Minja free-kick.

Group B Standings: A Race Against Time

As of Friday’s matches, the Group B table reads as follows:
– Ivory Coast – 4 points (W1, D1)
– Burkina Faso – 3 points (W1, D1)
– Tanzania – 3 points (W1, D1)
– South Africa – 1 point (D1, L1)

For South Africa to advance, they must defeat Burkina Faso in their final group match, while Ivory Coast must beat Tanzania—a result that would leave both teams with five points, forcing a tiebreaker (goal difference, goals scored, or head-to-head record). If Ivory Coast win, they secure second place, while South Africa’s fate hinges on Burkina Faso’s performance against Tanzania.

Burkina Faso’s Historic Win and Tanzania’s Struggles

Burkina Faso’s 2-1 victory marked their first WAFCON win in five attempts, spanning two tournaments. Their Lady Stallions have shown resilience, overcoming a four-goal deficit against Ivory Coast in their opening match. Naomi Kabre’s lob in the 43rd minute had set the tone, but Tanzania’s quick recovery—thanks to Aisha Mnunka’s rebound header—kept the match alive until the red card sealed their fate.

Nigeria’s Saturday Showdown: Can They Rebound?

While Group B remains in flux, Group C features another high-stakes match on Saturday. Nigeria, the defending WAFCON champions, face Zambia, who have been dominating the group with two wins and a draw. Nigeria, however, suffered a shock 2-0 defeat to Malawi in their opening match—a result that has rocked their confidence.

If Nigeria can overcome Zambia, they may still have a realistic chance at advancing, but their first loss has left them one point behind Zambia (who lead with 4 points). A win against Zambia would put them in a tiebreaker situation, potentially forcing a playoff against Malawi if Zambia also win.

The Road Ahead: Can South Africa Pull It Off?

With only one match remaining in Group B, South Africa’s future hangs in the balance. Their next fixture against Burkina Faso will be decisive—a win would require Ivory Coast to lose to Tanzania, an unlikely but not impossible scenario. If they lose, they will be eliminated, ending their WAFCON 2026 campaign with just one point.

The 2027 World Cup qualification is still within reach, but consistency will be key. South Africa’s second-half resilience against Ivory Coast proved they have the fire to compete, but defensive vulnerabilities and late-game luck will determine whether they advance or fall short.

As WAFCON 2026 enters its final weekend, every match carries weighty consequences, and the dramatic twists of this tournament continue to unfold.
