South Africa Intensifies Crackdown on Undocumented Immigration: Over 127 Foreign Nationals Arrested Amid Rising Anti-Immigrant Tensions

South Africa’s law enforcement agencies have executed a series of high-profile operations targeting undocumented foreign nationals, resulting in the arrest of 127 individuals across multiple provinces. The coordinated raids, conducted in collaboration with the Department of Home Affairs, mark a significant escalation in the government’s efforts to combat illegal immigration—a contentious issue that has recently sparked widespread public unrest and violent protests.

A Nationwide Crackdown on Illegal Immigration

The arrests are part of Operation New Broom, a multi-phase initiative aimed at identifying, detaining, and deporting foreign nationals residing in South Africa without proper documentation. Minister of Home Affairs, Leon Schreiber, confirmed that dozens of those apprehended will face mandatory deportation proceedings, aligning with the country’s legal framework.

This is not the first such operation. Over the past year, South Africa has conducted numerous raids, particularly in high-density areas where undocumented migrants are believed to congregate. The latest wave of arrests follows a series of anti-immigrant protests that erupted in June, characterized by violence, looting, and intimidation targeting foreign nationals—primarily from Nigeria, Ghana, Ethiopia, and Zimbabwe.

Operation Prosper: Targeting Illegal Mining and Human Trafficking

One of the most significant operations, Operation Prosper, was launched in Stilfontein, Gauteng, on July 29. The intelligence-led initiative focused on illegal mining activities, where authorities alleged that undocumented workers were extracting gold-bearing materials and transporting them to unlicensed melting facilities.

The operation resulted in:
– The arrest of 24 undocumented foreign nationals
– The detention of one suspect accused of bribery, allegedly involved in facilitating illegal mining operations.

Police sources stated that the raids were conducted based on pre-existing intelligence reports indicating widespread exploitation of foreign labor in the mining sector.

Limpopo Province: 127 Arrests in a Single Operation

In Limpopo Province, law enforcement agencies conducted a five-district sweep, employing stop-and-search operations, roadblocks, and compliance inspections to identify undocumented migrants. The coordinated effort, involving multiple law enforcement agencies, led to the arrest of 127 foreign nationals, including:
– 115 Zimbabwean nationals (repatriated immediately)
– Nine Ethiopians
– Three Ghanaians

Additionally, three employers were arrested for allegedly knowingly hiring undocumented workers, violating South Africa’s Immigration Act (2002).

The operation also resulted in the apprehension of wanted suspects previously linked to other criminal offenses, reinforcing the government’s commitment to cross-sector law enforcement collaboration.

Government Response to Rising Xenophobia

South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa has repeatedly condemned the violent anti-immigrant sentiment that has gripped parts of the country. In a recent address, he emphasized that migrants are not responsible for unemployment, crime, or service delivery failures, urging citizens to reject scapegoating.

The government has also vowed to hold accountable those involved in unlawful anti-immigration activities, including vigilante groups and individuals inciting violence. Meanwhile, Nigeria and Ghana have called on the African Union (AU) to intervene, demanding stronger protections for their nationals facing persecution in South Africa.

Recent Arrest Trends and Deportation Efforts

Since mid-July, South African police have arrested over 1,200 suspects, including 159 undocumented foreign nationals, as part of Operation Shanela in Gauteng Province. These figures reflect the government’s zero-tolerance policy toward illegal immigration, particularly in light of the June protests, which saw foreign-owned businesses looted and migrants attacked.

The crackdown follows a decade-long debate over South Africa’s immigration policies, with critics arguing that loopholes in visa regulations and corruption in enforcement have enabled large-scale illegal migration. The current operations aim to restore legal compliance while addressing public concerns over job displacement and resource strain.

Minister Schreiber’s Statement on Rule of Law

Minister Schreiber reiterated that the Department of Home Affairs remains committed to enforcing South Africa’s constitution, which guarantees the rule of law while protecting the rights of both citizens and legal residents. He stressed that:

“The Home Affairs Department will continue its efforts to restore order and ensure that undocumented foreign nationals are processed in accordance with the law. Our operations are not about discrimination but about upholding national sovereignty and protecting legitimate South African workers.”

Broader Implications for South Africa’s Immigration Policy

The recent arrests and deportations signal a shift in enforcement tactics, with authorities increasingly relying on data-driven raids rather than mass roundups. However, critics warn that harsh crackdowns without social integration programs may exacerbate tensions rather than resolve them.

As South Africa navigates economic challenges and social unrest, the government faces the dual challenge of balancing security concerns with humanitarian obligations toward its migrant population.
