A Journey of Compassion: From Fashion Photography to Life-Changing Impact in Uganda

The Crater Lakes Region of Western Uganda is a breathtaking destination known for its emerald-green lakes, dramatic volcanic peaks, and the rare opportunity to observe mountain gorillas and other primates in their natural habitat. For tourists, it’s a paradise of adventure and natural beauty. However, for the children living in its remote rural communities, the daily commute to school is far from idyllic—it’s a perilous journey fraught with danger.

Every morning, young students—some as young as three or four years old—venture onto dusty, unpaved roads, dodging speeding motorcycles and trucks. The risks are severe: accidents are common, and during the rainy season, the roads become treacherous mudslides, turning what should be a simple school run into a life-threatening ordeal. Yet, despite these hazards, these children brave the journey daily, determined to receive an education that could change their futures.

This is the reality that Marzena Bernard, a Key Biscayne-based philanthropist and fashion photographer, encountered during her first visit to Uganda four years ago. Invited by a friend to document the work of a local nonprofit school, she found herself deeply moved by the resilience and vulnerability of Ugandan children.

“When I arrived,” she recalls, “I saw children everywhere—so full of life and potential. But then I’d watch them walk alone on those dangerous roads, some as young as three or four, making their way to school. My heart broke. I knew I couldn’t just take photos—I had to do something to help.”

From Lens to Action: The Birth of Wheels for Education Africa

Marzena’s background in fashion photography had honed her eye for storytelling, but it was her compassion for the community that drove her to take action. Inspired by the African philosophy of Ubuntu—”I am because we are”—she understood that true change required collective effort and mutual support. This belief became the foundation of her new initiative: Wheels for Education Africa (WfEA), a nonprofit organization operating under the fiscal sponsorship of the Key Biscayne Community Foundation.

“After years in fashion, I felt grounded by this work,” she explains. “It’s not just about individual success—it’s about lifting up an entire community. The children in Uganda deserve safe roads, good schools, and the chance to thrive.”

WfEA’s mission is simple yet transformative: provide safe, reliable transportation for schoolchildren in rural Uganda, ensuring they can attend classes without fear. The organization has already made significant strides, securing funds to purchase a dedicated school van that transports children from four different villages to their educational institutions.

“My goal is to acquire at least three more vans,” Marzena states. “Every child should have the right to a safe journey to school. That’s non-negotiable.”

Beyond Transportation: Building Stronger Schools and Communities

While safe transportation is a critical first step, WfEA recognizes that education extends far beyond the classroom walls. Many rural schools in Uganda suffer from basic infrastructure deficiencies, particularly in sanitation and hygiene facilities.

“There is an immense need for proper bathrooms and clean water access,” Marzena notes. “Children shouldn’t have to miss school because their school lacks even the most basic amenities. The community’s support has been overwhelming—parents, teachers, and locals are all eager to contribute.”

One powerful example of this community spirit occurred in a village where parents volunteered en masse to dig a new road. At 7 a.m. sharp, dozens of adults—women, men, and children—gathered with shovels to clear a path for WfEA’s delivery truck, ensuring it could transport building materials to upgrade the school’s facilities.

“The people of Uganda are so kind and resilient,” Marzena observes. “They work together—women tend crops side by side, cook meals for one another, and care for each other’s children. And they do it with joy, with smiles. The saying ‘It takes a village’ is more than a phrase here—it’s a way of life.”

A Vision for the Future: Safe Roads, Stronger Minds

Wheels for Education Africa is more than just a transportation program—it’s a movement toward equity and opportunity. By ensuring children can attend school safely, Marzena and her team are breaking down barriers that have kept generations trapped in cycles of poverty.

“Education is the greatest equalizer,” she emphasizes. “When a child can focus on learning instead of worrying about crossing a dangerous road, their potential is limitless. That’s the change I want to see.”

For those inspired to support this cause, WfEA offers transparency and impact through its website, wheelsforeducationafrica.org, where visitors can explore stunning photography, video updates, and detailed reports on the organization’s work. From before-and-after school facility upgrades to heartwarming stories of children who now attend school safely, the platform provides a firsthand look at the difference being made.

How You Can Help: Joining the Wheels for Education Movement

While WfEA’s achievements are already remarkable, Marzena remains committed to expanding its reach. Whether through donations, volunteer opportunities, or awareness campaigns, individuals worldwide can play a role in transforming Ugandan education.

“Every contribution—big or small—makes a difference,” she says. “Together, we can ensure that no child in Uganda has to choose between safety and an education. That’s a future worth fighting for.”

As the sun rises over the Crater Lakes Region, casting golden light on the hills and valleys, one thing is clear: Marzena Bernard’s journey from photographer to philanthropist has not only changed lives—it has inspired a new generation to believe in the power of collective action.
