Escalating Tensions: US-Iran Conflict Expands as Houthis Target Red Sea Oil Traffic, Global Markets React

A Multifront Standoff: Iran, Houthis, and the Red Sea Oil Crisis

The Middle East is once again on the brink of a broader conflict as Iran-backed Houthis escalate their naval operations in the Red Sea, while the United States and Iran engage in a relentless cycle of military strikes and retaliatory threats. The latest developments—including Houthi attacks on Saudi oil tankers, Iranian missile strikes on Jordan, and US airstrikes in Iran—have sent global oil prices surging and raised fears of a regional conflagration. Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the crisis remain stalled, with both sides hardening their positions.

Houthis Strike Saudi Oil Traffic, Threatening Global Supply Chains

In a dramatic escalation, Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis claimed responsibility for striking two Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea on Thursday, days after announcing a maritime blockade on Saudi shipping. The attacks, which caused a fire on at least one vessel, the Encelia, have sent shockwaves through global energy markets.

Satellite imagery from NASA’s VIIRS sensor confirmed the presence of a thermal anomaly matching the Encelia’s last known position, indicating a fire on the vessel’s bow. The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported that a tanker was hit by an “unknown projectile” 70 nautical miles southwest of Al Shuqaiq, Saudi Arabia, causing an onboard fire. All crew members were reported safe, but the incident underscores the Houthis’ determination to disrupt Saudi oil exports.

The Houthis’ blockade of the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, a critical chokepoint at the southern end of the Red Sea, threatens to sever a key alternative route for Saudi oil exports. Previously, Saudi Arabia had rerouted millions of barrels from the Strait of Hormuz to the Red Sea, exiting via Bab al-Mandeb. Now, that lifeline is under direct threat.

Helima Croft, head of global strategy at RBC Capital Markets, warned that if the Houthis succeed in blocking the strait, “we start talking again about a ‘no way out’ situation for oil supplies.” With global crude prices already rising—Brent crude jumped 3.9% to nearly $98 per barrel—the potential for further disruptions could trigger inflationary pressures and force major central banks to reconsider monetary policy.

The Houthis, led by Iran, have long threatened to target Saudi shipping, and their latest moves align with Tehran’s broader strategy of prolonging regional instability. A Houthi military spokesperson, Yahya Saree, vowed to “continue naval operations against Saudi Arabia” and enforce a “siege for a siege” policy, matching Iran’s retaliatory approach.

Iran’s Retaliatory Strikes and the Escalating Cycle of Violence

Iran’s military campaign against US and allied targets in the region intensified on Thursday, with four missiles fired toward Jordan, three of which were intercepted by Jordanian air defenses. The fourth missile landed in an uninhabited area, causing no casualties. Earlier in the week, Iran launched six missiles at Jordan, including strikes on the King Faisal Air Base, as confirmed by European Space Agency satellite imagery showing smoke rising from the facility.

The attacks follow a pattern of proportional retaliation—a doctrine Iran has consistently followed since the 2020 killing of Qasem Soleimani, the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Quds Force. In response to US airstrikes targeting Iranian military sites, Tehran has struck back with ballistic missiles, drones, and cyberattacks, avoiding direct all-out war while signaling its willingness to escalate.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reinforced this stance in a post on X (formerly Twitter), declaring that “any aggression against Iran, including our infrastructure, will compel a powerful and decisive response.” This “eye for an eye” policy has been echoed by Iran’s IRGC commander, Brigadier General Seyyed Majid Mousavi, who warned that attacks on Iranian bridges or power plants would result in disruptions to electricity supplies for US allies hosting American forces in the region.

The US, meanwhile, has ratcheted up its threats, with President Donald Trump vowing to “bomb and destroy one bridge or power plant every time Iran targets a ship in the Strait of Hormuz.” Secretary of State Marco Rubio later framed this as a “head for an eye” policy, contrasting it with Iran’s “eye for an eye” doctrine.

Iran’s retaliatory strikes on Thursday included:
– Shalamcheh border crossing (Khuzestan province): Two people killed, at least 11 wounded in a missile attack.
– Andimeshk and Ahvaz (Khuzestan): Locations on the outskirts targeted by US airstrikes.
– Eslamabad-e Gharb (Kermanshah province): A site near the Iraq border struck.
– Bushehr (near Iran’s only operating nuclear reactor): Explosions reported.
– Sirik and Jask (Hormozgan province): Coastal areas hit by US strikes.

The US military confirmed conducting airstrikes against Iranian military and maritime targets, including air defenses and missile storage facilities. The escalation follows 12 consecutive nights of US strikes on Iranian sites, including drone and missile attacks.

US Military Presence in the Region: Amphibious Ready Groups on High Alert

In anticipation of further conflict, the US Navy’s USS Tripoli Amphibious Ready Group (ARG), carrying 2,200 Marines, has returned to Okinawa, Japan, after deploying to the Middle East. The group played a key role in enforcing the US blockade of Iranian ports earlier this year, boarding vessels attempting to bypass sanctions.

The USS Boxer ARG, another amphibious assault ship with 2,200 Marines, remains in the region, ready to enforce the US blockade of Iran and potentially support ground operations if needed. These ships, equipped with F-35B fighter jets, helicopters, and landing craft, serve as floating forward operating bases, capable of rapid deployment in case of a larger conflict.

The sustained US military presence signals Washington’s determination to deter further Iranian aggression, though the risk of miscalculation remains high.

Diplomatic Deadlock: Rubio and Lavrov Discuss Ukraine Amid Middle East Tensions

While the US and Iran engage in military posturing, Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on the sidelines of the ASEAN summit in Manila. The discussion centered on “the US-Russia relationship and the need to end the Russia-Ukraine war,” according to a State Department readout.

Lavrov, in a Telegram post, emphasized Russia’s stance on Ukraine, calling for “a political and diplomatic settlement” while reiterating Moscow’s opposition to “further arming the Kyiv regime.” Rubio, when asked about pressing Lavrov on Ukraine, responded that the US would “talk about it” but did not commit to direct confrontation.

The meeting came as US President Donald Trump has repeatedly pledged to end the Ukraine war within 24 hours of returning to office, a promise that remains unfulfilled over 500 days into his second term. The stalemate in Ukraine contrasts sharply with the rapid escalation in the Middle East, where de-escalation efforts appear stalled.

Saudi Nuclear Deal Sparks Concerns Amid Regional Turmoil

Adding to the geopolitical complexities, Saudi Arabia has secured US approval for a nuclear energy deal, allowing Riyadh to enrich uranium for civilian reactors. While the agreement includes safeguards to prevent weapons proliferation, critics warn that it could expand Saudi Arabia’s nuclear capabilities, potentially leading to an arms race in the region.

Secretary of State Rubio defended the deal, stating:

“When countries decide to pursue a peaceful nuclear program, we’d prefer them do it with us rather than with another country. This allows us to have influence over its direction.”

The agreement now requires Congressional approval, raising questions about whether the US can maintain oversight in a region already gripped by conflict.

The Human Cost: Four US Service Members Killed in Recent Strikes

The escalating violence has taken a human toll, with four US service members killed in recent engagements with Iranian forces. Their remains were dignifiedly transferred at Dover Air Force Base on Wednesday, marking another grim milestone in the US-Iran standoff.

President Trump, reflecting on the transfers, called it “the toughest thing I do.” The deaths bring the total number of US troops killed in connection with the Iran conflict to 18, deepening the political and military stakes in the region.

Conclusion: A Region on the Brink

The US-Iran conflict has expanded beyond the Strait of Hormuz, with the Houthis now targeting Saudi oil traffic in the Red Sea. The cycle of strikes and retaliations shows no signs of slowing, as both sides dig in behind their “eye for an eye” and “head for an eye” doctrines.

Global oil markets are under severe pressure, with prices nearing $98 per barrel as supply chains face new disruptions. The Bab al-Mandeb Strait, a critical alternative route for Saudi oil, is now in jeopardy, raising fears of a supply shock that could destabilize economies worldwide.

Meanwhile, diplomatic channels remain closed, with no clear path to de-escalation. The US military presence in the region remains robust, but the risk of accidental escalation grows with each passing strike.

As the situation unfolds, one thing is certain: the Middle East is at a crossroads, and the world watches closely as tensions threaten to spiral into a broader conflict.
