A Life Dedicated to Education, Faith, and Empowerment

In a quiet yet profound farewell, the United Methodist Church mourns the loss of Rosemary Nyarugwe, a towering figure in Zimbabwean education and a beacon of faith, who passed away peacefully on June 22, 2026, at her Harare home after a courageous battle with cancer. At 64 years old, Nyarugwe left behind an indelible legacy as the first female principal of Nyadire College of Education, the United Methodist Church’s sole teacher training institution in Zimbabwe. Her life’s work—rooted in unwavering dedication, visionary leadership, and a deep commitment to uplifting women and communities—has left an enduring impact on education, church leadership, and social transformation across the nation.

From Primary School Teacher to College Principal: A Journey of Resilience and Excellence

Nyarugwe’s professional trajectory was nothing short of extraordinary. Beginning her career as a primary school teacher, she methodically climbed the ranks, leveraging her intellectual acumen, administrative prowess, and unshakable faith to ascend to the helm of Nyadire College. Her tenure as principal—spanning over a decade—transformed the institution into a premier center for teacher education, earning national recognition for its academic rigor, infrastructure development, and holistic student development.

Her leadership was not merely administrative; it was transformative. Under her guidance, Nyadire College became synonymous with excellence in early childhood development training, a specialization she championed with relentless passion. The college’s 100% pass rate for over 15 consecutive years—a testament to her pedagogical vision—produced generations of highly competent, disciplined, and government-approved primary school teachers, directly benefiting Zimbabwe’s education sector.

Breaking Barriers: A Trailblazer for Women in Leadership

Nyarugwe’s impact extended far beyond the confines of Nyadire College. As the first female principal of the institution, she shattered gender barriers in a male-dominated field, inspiring countless women to pursue leadership roles in education and the church. Bishop Gift K. Machinga, who led the Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, and Botswana Episcopal Area and knew Nyarugwe for three decades, reflected on her legacy:

“When we remember Rosemary, we think of emancipation of women, hard work, and a high level of commitment to God and the church. She opened doors for many women who realized they could achieve bigger things.”

This sentiment was echoed by Rev. Peter Mageto, vice chancellor of Africa University and secretary of the African Association of Methodist Institutions of Higher Education (AAMIHE). Mageto described Nyarugwe as a leader par excellence, whose faith, service, and strategic focus redefined institutional excellence. She served as the chair of AAMIHE, where she fostered collaborative partnerships that elevated the standards of higher education across Africa.

Innovation and Collaboration: Expanding Access to Quality Education

One of Nyarugwe’s most significant contributions was her visionary approach to educational access. Recognizing the challenges faced by full-time teachers who could not pursue conventional university degrees, she spearheaded a groundbreaking partnership between Nyadire College and Africa University. Together, they launched a subsidized Bachelor of Education in Early Childhood Development, a program designed to bridge the gap in teacher training while ensuring academic oversight and degree approval from Africa University’s Senate.

This collaboration underscored Nyarugwe’s belief in institutional synergy, where shared resources, expertise, and funding could amplify educational outcomes. Her ability to forge meaningful alliances—whether with United Methodist institutions, government bodies, or international partners—became a hallmark of her leadership.

A Multifaceted Leader: Church, Community, and Global Influence

Nyarugwe’s influence was not confined to academia. She was a devoted church leader, serving in roles such as district lay leader, chair of Church and Society in the Zimbabwe West Conference, and a delegate to the World Methodist Council. Her work in these capacities promoted Christian leadership, social responsibility, and community transformation, aligning education with spiritual and moral growth.

Her global connections were equally impressive. Through her involvement with The Nyadire Connection, a faith-based nonprofit founded by United Methodist churches in Western Pennsylvania, she bridged cultural and geographical divides, fostering lasting partnerships that supported Nyadire Mission’s development initiatives. Ralph Duckworth, chairperson of The Nyadire Connection, praised her as a dedicated educator and savvy administrator who expanded the college’s curriculum and attracted new students, elevating Nyadire to premier status in Zimbabwe’s educational landscape.

Infrastructure and Development: Building a Legacy of Progress

Under Nyarugwe’s leadership, Nyadire College underwent remarkable physical and institutional transformations. Her unwavering focus on development resulted in:
– The construction of a 2,000-seat multipurpose arena, enhancing the college’s capacity for sports, cultural events, and community gatherings.
– A state-of-the-art early childhood development training complex, ensuring students received cutting-edge, hands-on education.
– A 23-bedroom college guest house, providing accommodation for visiting scholars, students, and dignitaries.
– Business units in agriculture, butchery, fishing, and farming, fostering entrepreneurial skills and economic sustainability for the college and surrounding community.

Rev. Lancelot Mukundu, chairperson of Nyadire Mission, highlighted her unshakable belief in possibility, stating:

“With Nyarugwe, nothing was impossible when it came to infrastructure development and project implementation. Her vision turned Nyadire into a model of progress.”

A Mentor and Role Model: Inspiring Generations

Nyarugwe’s mentorship extended to colleagues, students, and fellow church leaders. Rev. Beauty R. Maenzanise, an executive with the United Methodist Board of Higher Education and Ministry, described her as a strong advocate for quality education who valued collaboration and respectful dialogue. Her ability to elevate ideas and foster teamwork left an indelible mark on those who worked alongside her.

Rev. Jamisse Taimo, executive director of the LEAD Hub for Lusophone Africa, praised her as a visionary who shared her knowledge generously, reinforcing her commitment to The United Methodist Church’s mission both in Zimbabwe and beyond.

Even former colleagues like Rev. Jairous Mafondokoto, who served as acting principal before Nyarugwe’s appointment, attested to her innovative spirit. Mafondokoto recalled how she pioneered early childhood teacher training, a program he later supported in securing ministry approval. His recommendation to appoint her as principal was rooted in her forward-thinking approach, which revolutionized Nyadire’s infrastructure and academic standing.

A Widow’s Strength: Raising a Family and Advancing Education

Nyarugwe’s personal life was equally remarkable. Widowed in 2001, she single-handedly raised her four children—Sinikiwe, Sharon, Patience, and Mike—while ensuring they received the best education possible. Her own academic journey was equally impressive; she advanced her studies to doctoral level, a testament to her intellectual curiosity and relentless pursuit of knowledge.

Her story resonated deeply with Rev. Rebecca Tendai Gurupira, coordinator of The United Methodist Church’s Ministry with Women, Children and Youth. Gurupira described Nyarugwe as a heroine who embodied resilience, using her platform to empower widows and women through grant proposals and empowerment programs. In 2025, she was invited to speak at International Widows Day commemorations, where she inspired attendees with her story of strength and self-sufficiency.

A Life Well-Lived: Honoring a Legacy of Service

Rosemary Nyarugwe’s death on June 22, 2026, marked the end of an era, but her legacy endures through:
– The thousands of teachers she trained, now shaping future generations in Zimbabwe’s classrooms.
– The institutional partnerships she forged, ensuring continued access to quality education.
– The infrastructure she built, which will serve students and communities for decades.
– The women she inspired, who now lead with confidence and purpose in education, church, and civic life.

Alexander Katiyo, vice principal of Nyadire College, encapsulated her impact:

“We will remember Rosemary as a distinguished Zimbabwean educationist, administrator, and church leader who made significant contributions to teacher education and community development. Her leadership fostered partnerships that improved learning opportunities and transformed lives.”

Shadreck Mataruka, a former Zimbabwe West Conference lay leader, echoed this sentiment:

“She brought a lot of change to Mutoko Mudzi District. Whatever she did, she did from the heart. Her death is a big loss, but her legacy will live on in the hearts of those she touched.”

A Final Farewell: Interment and Remembrance

Nyarugwe’s funeral service will be held on June 27, 2026, with her body to be interred at her rural home in Chure, Uzumba District. As mourners gather to pay their respects, they will reflect on a life dedicated to faith, family, and the transformative power of education.

Her story is a testament to what can be achieved through perseverance, vision, and an unyielding commitment to service. Rosemary Nyarugwe’s legacy is not just a chapter in Zimbabwe’s educational history—it is a blueprint for leadership, empowerment, and hope.

Nyadire College of Education’s modern facilities, including the early childhood development training complex, stand as a testament to Rosemary Nyarugwe’s visionary leadership.

Collaborative efforts between Nyadire College and Africa University exemplify Nyarugwe’s dedication to expanding educational opportunities across Africa.
