Real Madrid Foundation Expands Educational Reach in Cameroon with New Basketball Program and Coach Training Initiative

The Real Madrid Foundation has further solidified its commitment to leveraging sports as a catalyst for education and social development in Yaoundé, Cameroon, through its Don Bosco Mimboman social sports school. This initiative, now entering a pivotal phase of expansion, is designed to foster holistic growth among youth while promoting gender inclusivity and community engagement. One of the most transformative developments this season has been the first-ever specialized training program for coaches, blending football and basketball methodologies to prepare the school for its upcoming basketball initiative—a strategic move to enhance female participation in sports and education.

A Three-Day Masterclass in Sports-Based Education

From October 10th to 12th, the foundation hosted an intensive three-day coaching workshop in Yaoundé, bringing together four local coaches alongside professional sports educators and specialists from across the city. The training, structured around the Real Madrid Foundation’s educational methodology, was divided into theoretical sessions and hands-on practical workshops, ensuring a balanced approach to skill development and pedagogical innovation.

The curriculum emphasized sports as a vehicle for values-based learning, with a strong focus on respect, discipline, and teamwork—core principles embedded in the foundation’s philosophy. Coaches were guided through activity design frameworks that integrate these values into every training session, ensuring that athletic development is complemented by social and emotional growth.

A distinctive highlight of the workshop was the dedicated module on basketball methodology, tailored to prepare the school for the launch of its first dedicated basketball program. This expansion is not merely an addition to the sports offerings but a deliberate strategy to increase female engagement, addressing historical disparities in sports participation and aligning with the foundation’s broader mission of gender equality and inclusive education.

Beyond the Pitch: A Holistic Approach to Youth Development

The Don Bosco Mimboman school operates on a multi-dimensional model, ensuring that its impact extends far beyond traditional sports training. While weekly football sessions remain a cornerstone of the program, organized by age-specific groups, the school also integrates:

  • Academic Support Programs – Tutoring and mentorship to reinforce classroom learning and academic performance.
  • Digital Literacy Initiatives – Workshops aimed at equipping students with essential computer skills for the modern workforce.
  • Community Engagement Activities – Events that bring together students, families, and local stakeholders, fostering a sense of collective responsibility and belonging.
  • Family-Inclusive Workshops – Parent and guardian sessions focused on positive reinforcement, sportsmanship, and collaborative parenting strategies.

These complementary programs are designed to create a nurturing environment where children can thrive academically, socially, and athletically, breaking cycles of poverty and limited opportunity through structured, long-term intervention.

Strategic Partnerships and Future Growth

The expansion of the Don Bosco Mimboman school is made possible through collaborative partnerships, with Azulmarino serving as the official sponsor of the foundation’s training and supervision missions in Cameroon. This partnership provides financial and logistical support, enabling the foundation to scale its operations, introduce new sports disciplines, and enhance the quality of coaching and educational resources.

Looking ahead, the foundation’s leadership in Yaoundé is focused on sustaining momentum while expanding outreach. Plans include:
– Increasing the number of basketball teams to ensure greater gender balance in participation.
– Developing a mentorship program for young coaches, ensuring the long-term sustainability of the initiative.
– Strengthening ties with local schools and NGOs to amplify the social impact of sports-based education.

A Model for Sports-Driven Social Change

The Real Madrid Foundation’s work in Cameroon exemplifies how sports can be a powerful tool for education, social cohesion, and empowerment. By training coaches in evidence-based methodologies, introducing new sports disciplines, and integrating academic and community support, the foundation is not just building better athletes—it is cultivating future leaders, breaking barriers, and creating lasting change.

As the Don Bosco Mimboman school continues to grow, its model serves as a beacon for similar initiatives worldwide, proving that when sports, education, and community engagement intersect, transformative development is possible.
